Alien film wraps in Fiordland

Filming on the latest in the Alien series has wrapped in New Zealand.

The news came via the film's official Twitter page that shooting for Alien: Covenant had concluded at Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park and also included a photo from the set showing Sir Ridley Scott and actress Katherine Waterson.

Very little is known about the plot, but it is a sequel to 2012's Prometheus and a prequel to 1979's Alien - the film which introduced the Xenomorph creature to the world - both of which were directed by Scott.

Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are returning in the movie and are joined by newcomers Amy Seimetz, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, Danny McBride and Waterson.

Fassbender reprises his role as android David,  and said the film featured "aliens coming out of people" and an "impressive set".

The 39-year-old said: "Again, the most impressive sets I've seen since Prometheus, which was the original setting. It's a fantastic mixture of high-end technology and primitive elements. The way that I can explain it is the same way that Ridley did Blade Runner."

Alien: Covenant is due for release in August next year by 20th Century Fox.
