Dunedin's Radio One has put together an absolute dream line-up for the August incarnation of its monthly 91Club Series.

Heading the show are post-neo-goth dream-pop mermaid duo Purple Pilgrims, playing their first show in the South Island in four years.

The sisters Valentine and Clementine Nixon make angelic, ancient-sounding celestial noise, a trance-state-inducing seduction of sensuality and wonderment.

The show will also be the formal new moniker debut of New Dawn, the Christchurch duo of Indi Force (of Doprah fame) and violinist Anita Clark, aka Motte.

"We have been playing around Christchurch for a while, mostly just really small ambient shows,'' Force told me in a live-to-air interview on Radio One.

"The sound of ice cubes and water is one of the sounds we use, but it kind of depends on the place we go though if they have a freezer or not. Hopefully the gallery does!

"I play keys but it's mostly lots of synth textures. Anita just does the most beautiful things on the violin, she loops it and it starts to sound like a wall of sound. She also does a bit of guitar bowing which is very Sigur Ros of her.''

Lucy Hunter, of punk trio Opposite Sex, will perform a solo set to open the night's proceedings.

A LITTLE DIFFERENT

The Anteroom hosts Deep Days Listening Nights 004, with Jason Lescalleet (US), Gerry Hemingway (US, Switzerland) and Sarah Weaver (New York) for a performance related to the idea of "listening with experimental electronic music, improvised percussion, and phenomenological inquiry leading the way''.

It's something a little different that's sure to be fresh and challenging.

PROMOTION TOUR

Young Auckland garage rock outfit Yukon Era and Palmerston North indie rockers Soda Boyz are on a nationwide dual-release tour this month, promoting Yukon Era's new single Consume and Scratch and Soda Boyz's debut EP By Soda Boyz.

Yukon Era's swirling songs, off-the-leash energy and San Franciscan weirdness were first heard on record back in January, when the band released its debut self-titled EP, one of my favourite national releases, and the band has worked quickly to follow it up.

This time around, Aucklanders Christian Dimick (guitar/vocals), Lachie Thurlow (guitar), James Thorrington (drums) and Pierre Beasley (bass) decided to head into renowned Auckland studio The Lab and spent three days recording with producer Olly Harmer (The Naked and Famous).

The result is a sophomore effort expected to be released later this year, via Morningstar.

With Consume and Scratch leading the way, things might be getting a little more post-punk, heavier in both production and atmosphere.

Psychedelic sounds are brought more to the fore, with shades of Calgary's Preoccupations being layered in melodic, bordering on choral, vocals.

The single will be available at the show on a limited edition USB alongside unreleased songs, videos and photos.
