Oscar-winning film maker Jane Campion has been out on night patrol with police in Queenstown in preparation for a television mini-series she'll begin shooting in February.

Police said Campion was "quite hard case", and lasted to about 3am on the night patrol.

The Top of the Lake drama series, directed by Campion and Australian Garth Davis, follows an investigation into the disappearance of a pregnant teenage daughter of a local drug lord.

The detective will be played by Elisabeth Moss, the girl's father by Matt Mitcham and a local character by Holly Hunter.

The series will be co-produced by BBC Two, UKTV in Australia and New Zealand and Sundance Channel in the United States. Screen Australia, Screen NSW and Fulcrum Media Finance are providing investment and finance, according to Onfilm magazine.

Campion was born in New Zealand and lives in Australia.
