It's a tough job being a slave, but someone's got to do it. Especially when the future of the Roman Republic is at stake. Nigel Benson catches up with Jenna Lind.

Jenna Lind is pretty talkative for a slave.

The Australian actor is speaking from Los Angeles, but her voice is straight from Blakehurst, south Sydney.

Lind plays Kore and is core in the third and final Spartacus season Spartacus: War Of The Damned. Her character is a slave loyal to (and a lover of) Roman noble Marcus Crassus (Simon Merrells), who has been charged with bringing an end to Spartacus and his rebellion.

And her divided loyalties are a barometer for an epic series conclusion.

''I'd auditioned for the show previously, in Australia at the end of the pilot season, and then got called back to do a boot camp,'' she recalled.

''Then I had seven days to pack up my life. You get good at packing. I'm lucky I've got nice parents who could put all my stuff in storage. You have to learn not to get attached to things. Sometimes I'll think: 'Didn't I have a shirt? Oh, that's in Australia'.''

The role is a step into the big time for Lind, whose film credits include Burning Man and Crush, while she has been seen on New Zealand television screens in Australian productions such as Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, All Saints and Wild Boys.

''I'm loving it. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. When you walk in and see the sets ... They built a Roman villa in the warehouse. It's incredible. I thought everything would be green screen and imaginary stuff. But the trees look like real trees and the costumes are absolutely amazing. It's very cool stuff.

''I knew a general overview of my character, but you have no say in the script. We would find out what happened to our characters when we got the script every two and a-half weeks. Everyone would drop everything to find out what happened.

''My character has a great story line. In other seasons the slaves are treated badly, but I play a slave in a lucky position. She is not treated badly like the other slaves. She's completely happy. Rebellion? What is this?

''She is safe and secure and then awful things happen to her and everything is flipped on its head and she starts to see the how the other slaves live.''

Kore is a house slave to the wealthiest citizen in the Roman Senate, Marcus Crassus, who she has been serving since the birth of his son, Tiberius (Christian Antidormi), who sees her as a mother figure.

She has a privileged position and is treated almost as an equal by Crassus and Tiberius.

However, Tiberius falls into a deep depression when he is forced to slaughter his friend Sabinus in a legion decimation punishment.

Crassus and Tiberius fall out and Kore fatefully attempts to mend their rift, with devastating consequences.

When Crassus orders her to stay in Sinuessa (modern day Mondragone, in Campania, Italy) with Tiberius, Kore kills her guard and escapes to join the rebellion.

Crassus has no time for sentimentality and he enlists the young and fiercely competitive Julius Caesar (Todd Lasance) as he finalises plans to confront Spartacus and his band of rebels on the battlefield.

The rebel army, meanwhile, has swelled its ranks with thousands of freed slaves and become such a force it has started to challenge the mighty armies of Rome. And Spartacus is more determined than ever to bring down the entire Roman Republic. The scene is set for a legendary and bloody climax, as Spartacus: War of the Damned unleashes a battle that will be hell on earth.

• Spartacus: War Of The Damned premieres on Sunday at 8.30pm, onThe Box.
