TV3 current affairs programme 3D has officially been axed, with a spokeswoman confirming it will not be renewed next year.

MediaWorks made the announcement shortly before 5pm today.

A spokeswoman said a consultation process with existing staff, including host Samantha Hayes, had come to a close and the decision was made not to renew the show.

"MediaWorks would like to acknowledge the efforts and dedication of the 3D team who have consistently produced outstanding work over a long period of time.

"We are all extremely proud of the way our current affairs teams are respected and admired by other media and the wider community. Our challenge now is to explore new ways to deliver high quality investigative journalism."

The company was now "working with affected staff on redeployment opportunities," according to a statement.

The news comes after the programme, which launched with original hosts Duncan Garner and Guyon Espiner in 2013, suffered record low ratings in October.
