Smacking debate gets final airing

As the deadline looms in the smacking referendum, Channel Nine provides one last chance to get both sides of the debate.

Tonight at 7.30pm it carries a new CTV-produced one-hour debate between the man behind the referendum, Larry Baldock (left), and the woman behind the dropping of section 59 of the Crimes Act, Green Party MP Sue Bradford (right).

Mr Baldock is a former United Party MP and now leader of the Kiwi Party.

Ms Bradford's move to have section 59 repealed during the last term of Parliament was designed to "stop force and associated violence being inflicted on children in the context of correction or discipline".

Mr Baldock challenged the change to the law and went on to promote the citizens initiated referendum, which asks: "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?".

The debate is followed by a 15-minute documentary produced by Aoraki Polytechnic student Richard Girvan, called Anti-Smacking Bill, presenting views from Dunedin people.

Voting in the referendum ends on Friday.
