Brent McEwan (St Clair) led from the start to the finish to
win the Otago strokeplay championship in windy conditions at
Balmacewen during the weekend.
Otago retained the Piper Cup, beating Aorangi 4.5 to 5.5 over
two rounds of matchplay in cold and windy conditions on the
Chisholm Park Links in Dunedin yesterday.
Thomas Facer (Otago) successfully defended his Otago
schoolboys' matchplay title yesterday, beating Queenstown's
Jamie Anstiss 5 and 4 in the final at Chisholm Park.
Michael Smith has been rewarded for his recent strokeplay
performance, which helped him qualify for the recent New
Zealand Open, by being selected to represent Otago in the
Grant Clements Memorial tournament at Mt Maunganui on
February 11 and 12.
Otago downed Southland 3 to 2 yesterday to finish with five
points and 14.5 games at the national interprovincial, and
will now play Northland for seventh and eighth places this
morning.
It was a tough day at the office for the Otago women's team
which came up against the favoured Auckland and Waikato teams
in the fifth and sixth rounds of the national interprovincial
at Whakatane yesterday.
After a bye and a rest yesterday morning, Otago romped up the
Division Two leaderboard with a 5-0 drubbing of Aorangi in
the afternoon to be on three points and 8.5 games with three
rounds to play.
North Harbour will start as favourite when 14 teams tee off
in this year's women's interprovincial which begins on the
Whakatane course this morning and continues until Saturday
when the semifinals and final will be played.
Southland is the toast of New Zealand golf after winning the
men's interprovincial by beating Bay of Plenty 3-2 in the
final on the Poverty Bay's Gisborne course on Saturday
afternoon.
