It was a morning of polite giggling and diplomatic speeches at the Chinese Garden yesterday, as the annual fashion entourage from Shanghai was welcomed to Dunedin.

Ten impeccably presented young women, and two slim-legged and stylishly cool young men - all students at the Shanghai University of Engineering Science - were welcomed along with Madame Zhou, dean of the International Fashion Academy Paris, which operates under the umbrella of university, and Shanghai designer Jialin Guo, also known as Candice.

This is the third year models from the university have come to the iD Dunedin Fashion Week.

The welcome was organised by Dunedin Shanghai Association chairman Malcolm Wong, who said the Western breakfast food on offer had been put together ''thinking about your fine figures'', a joke that brought polite laughter and nodding.

Madame Zhou said while Dunedin was not as big as Shanghai, ''it's very peaceful, and the people are very kind''.

The fashion week provided an international stage for the models, she said.
