These days, more and more homeowners are opting for unusual decor and furnishings, in an effort to create a home that is unique to them.

Annemieke Sutton and her husband Alan, recently opened a homewares store called 2Gypsies in Port Chalmers, specialising in quirky one-off furniture.

Mr and Mrs Sutton design and import their furniture from various parts of Indonesia and have found there is high demand for their one-of-a-kind pieces.

"There's a niche market of people wanting items that are quirky and original. People are sick of mass-produced furniture and want something in their homes that has a 'wow' factor," Mrs Sutton says.

Much of the furniture is created from recycled hard timbers sourced from panels off houses, old fishing trawlers and railway sleepers.

Items such as dining-room, bedside and coffee tables, chairs, day-beds, entertainment units and cupboards can be found in natural wood and whitewashed finishes or waxed, painted and polished in bold contemporary colours.

Whether people prefer ornate timeless pieces or funky eye-catching ones, Mrs Sutton says the style of imported furniture suits any home, whether it be an old villa or contemporary townhouse.

"The furniture is for the young and old and suits any style of home because it's contemporary, yet timeless."

As well as unique furniture, there is a wide range of furnishings and artworks, from candelabras, mirrors and sandstone statues to cushions, throws and driftwood lamps.

All artwork is one-off and certain to "add colour and cheer to any home," Mrs Sutton says.
