An illuminating look ... Photographed fantails on a lampshade is part of an exciting new look developed by Dunedin interior designer Robyn Buis and photographer Stefan Mutch.

Lampshades are enjoying exciting new looks with the use of unique papers and textiles, resulting in stunning designs.

"I think for years people have just chosen what is on the shelf. Now, they are wanting to have a point of difference and to move away from things that are mass-produced," says Robyn Buis, of Dunedin's Interior Design Studio.

"They are deliberately looking at design as a way of life."

Lampshades are commonly used in bedrooms, hallways and living areas to create ambience.
Robyn notes that the use of individualised mediums on lampshades is giving homeowners a more intimate, personal touch.

"Lampshades are like having a piece of art but it's functional and it just comes alive," says Robyn.
One such example is Dunedin photographer Stefan Mutch and Robyn joining forces to create a lampshade featuring images of fantails. The pair are planning to release a range of other designs featuring local themes.

WALLPAPERS

Wallpaper continues to wow people with its impressive depth and dimension.

Large patterns are still a favourite, as is textured wallpaper. Designs such as goblets, spheres, subliminal and stripes are creating an automatic "wow factor," notes Robyn.

"Texture has taken hold in wallpaper styles. It's almost the more, the better."

"People are letting go and having a bit of fun in the special areas of the home," she adds. In hallways and central areas it can link one part to another to create a sense of style.

FABRIC

Natural linens, pure silks, Italian velvet cottons, pure wool and embroidered cotton were strong themes in the European fabrics Robyn sourced during a trip to New York last September.

These "luxurious" fabrics are ideal for upholstery or soft furnishings, but were not priced "for the rich and famous."

"People are thinking very carefully about saving money," she explained, noting she selected the fabrics with that in mind.
