Dunedin international cyclist Alison Shanks is used to
living out of a suitcase, but during one of her rare days at
home, she let Lea Jones take a peek in her wardrobe.
How would you describe your style?
Smart casual. Sometimes a bit of a walking billboard when
looking after my sponsors.
Has it evolved over the years?
I'd like to think I've progressed from a more sporty look
(trackies etc) to a more dressy style - that is when I'm not
wearing Lycra. When I get the chance I love to dress up and
feel girly.
Describe your wardrobe.
I have the basic items like black pants, white T-shirts, and
cardies etc. And then I have a few brighter, exciting items
to really make an outfit. Versatile pieces are a must when
your wardrobe is a suitcase.
Whose style do you like or look up to?
I love watching the Sex and the City girls . . . but I don't
think I'd step out the door in some of their styles.
Who are your favourite designers?
I think we have some fantastic NZ designers. Storm and
Workshop would have to be a couple of my favourites.
What is your favourite item of clothing?
My 2XU blue casual jacket. A good jacket is a must in Dunnos.
My 2XU one is so practical and comfortable Favourite
shoes?
I do love my musty pink and black high heels with wooden
heels, but comfort before beauty when it comes to my feet. So
my favourites at the moment would have to be my gold and pink
Puma casuals I bought in America. And then there are my
cycling shoes which I do around 500km a week in.
Favourite accessory?
My Grandma's gold bracelet
What has been your best fashion bargain?
My cream double button winter coat from the markets in China.
Then there are all the evening dresses that Mum has sewn for
me. I love knowing no-one will have the same dress as me.
What has been your biggest fashion mistake?
The full matching purple silky leisure suit that I had in
primary school! And then there was the Airtec shirt with the
collar up.
A fashion tip?
Wear your style with confidence and you can get away with
anything.
A beauty tip?
Find a good face moisturiser that has sunscreen in it. That's
an essential when I'm out on the bike every day.
What would you buy if money was no object?
I'd always purchase unique one-off pieces. Then again, if
money was absolutely no object, I'd hire an expert personal
assistant to search the racks and pick out the best fashions
for me. I'm useless at distinguishing the difference between
what looks on the rack and what looks good on me.
