Cookbook

Chef, cartoonist and food harvester Daryl Crimp has updated his Wildfood Cookbook, first published and a bestseller in 2000.

My own copy of the original is now dog-eared and has morphed into a forensic scientist's smorgasbord of smeared ingredient stains.

Wildfoods Cookbook Reloaded (Halcyon) has some of the most popular recipes from the first book, lots of new game recipes and a dusting of true West Coast fodder including curried huhu grubs, possum stew and roast fillet of sandfly (1 medium-sized sandfly, as the big ones tend to be too gamey).

The recipes are generally ''no-fuss cooking'' that cunning hunters could use to further impress their families, gaining brownie points and more quality time in the bush or out at sea.

This book would also appeal to ''supermarket hunters'' who will struggle to source pukeko or swan but can often find rabbit, goat, venison or a myriad of fish to present their own wildfood feast.
