Designer dinners

The International Food Design Experience, Conference and Studio, hosted by the Food Design Institute and School of Design at Otago Polytechnic, runs from July 2-4 with more than 100 local and international chefs, designers and food lovers exploring and practising the latest food-design techniques.

As part of the programme, Dunedin food lovers are invited to attend special dinners on Thursday, July 3, or the gala dinner created by Chloe Morris on Friday, July 4.

The Thursday dinners

• For ''Shared Shed Koha'', chef Tim Lynch will create a three-course menu that challenges perceptions of sustainable food practice.

He will be using the experience to consider how we would eat in a natural disaster when the conventional props and rituals that surround eating are stripped away.

In the way of koha, diners will be asked to bring something to trade for their transport to a Macandrew Bay boatshed.

• ''Terroir - a natural experience'' sees Bracken chef Ken O'Connell and Giulio Sturla, of Roots, in Lyttelton, join forces to present a menu that will be decided on the day, depending upon what produce the chefs can forage and what is available locally.

• ''The Local'' sees sisters Robyn and Hannah Joynt use their creative strengths to create an evening of fine food and art.

Bachelor of culinary arts student Robyn will present a seasonal three-course dinner celebrating the finest from the Otago Farmers Market.

The meal will be accompanied by an artwork created during the evening by Hannah.

• ''A Night on the Hop''

At A Night On The Hop, Ombrellos Kitchen and Bar is throwing the fries away and looking for the perfect mouthful to complement their 14 tap beers.

Food Design Gala Dinner

The gala dinner on Friday, July 4, will be created by London food designer Chloe Morris with support from Liz Christensen and the bachelor of culinary arts students. This will be a provocative and immersive edible experience that will create memories for a lifetime.
