Stem-cell science to be discussed

A subject that excites "controversy, false promises and misinformation" will be discussed in Queenstown next month at a presentation by University of Auckland centre for brain research neuroscientist and stem cell researcher Assoc Prof Dr Bronwen Connor.

Presented by the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand and Wakatipu U3A, Dr Connor will "demystify the issues" surrounding an exciting field which holds great promise for the treatment of many diseases and injuries, including those of the brain.

Dr Connor will discuss clinical trials and the myths surrounding stem-cell treatment, and provide an update on research in New Zealand, including her own into adult stem cells.

Dr Connor has investigated the potential use of stem-cell therapy and gene transfer techniques for the treatment of brain injury and disease.

Her association with the Neurological Foundation began in 1997 when she was awarded the foundation's Philip Wrightson Postdoctoral Fellowship.

This enabled her to study in North America for three years where she investigated the potential use of gene therapy in Parkinson's Disease.

A member of the Neurological Foundation scientific advisory committee since 2008, Dr Connor returned to New Zealand in 2000 to set up her own laboratory.

Her presentation will be held at the Queenstown Events Centre mezzanine function room on July 4, from 10am to noon.
