> Otago Rose Society hosts an afternoon with Tony
Barnes, of Matthews Nursery, Wanganui, at 2pm in St Peter's
Church Hall, Hillside Rd. Mr Barnes will talk about
"commercial rose production and recent new varieties". Free
admission, free afternoon tea and raffles. Further

MONDAY, AUGUST 2
> Otago-Southland Branch NZ Camellia Society
7.30pm, Botanic Garden Centre, Lovelock Ave, Dunedin.
National Camellia Society president Tony Barnes will give a
presentation on the International Camellia Convention,
Kurume, Japan. Members of garden groups and the public are
most welcome. $2 door charge.
> North Otago Garden Club meets in the Union Parish
Hall at 7.30pm for the annual meeting. There will be a
demonstration of the making of a posy bowl and a herbal
"tussie mussie". Flower of the month is an early spring
flower and the competition is a camellia. Everyone welcome.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 3
> The Brockville Garden Club will meet in the
Community Church hall at 1.30pm. Mystery guest and quiz day.
Sales table, raffles and afternoon tea. All welcome.
> Bonsai meeting: Annual meeting at Holy Cross
Church hall, Ajax St, 7.30pm. Speaker from University of
Otago on "Evolution of Plants and Fungi". Tree of the month:
Any tree for a mini-show. All trees competing for mini-show
trophy.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 6
> HortTalk at Botanic Garden Centre, upper Lovelock
Ave, at noon: "Another World Wide Web - exploring the soil
food web", by Cherryl Prew, lab director, Soil Foodweb
Institute of NZ. Cherryl will explain the important
interactions between the billion micro-organisms found in one
teaspoon of healthy soil and why healthy soil makes healthy
food.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 7
> Otago Lily Society bulb sale for the public.
Maori Hill Community Centre, corner Highgate and Balmacewen

> Catlins Horticultural Society annual meeting 11am
at the Lumber Jack Restaurant, Owaka. All welcome. Inquiries

> At Orokonui Ecosanctuary from 10am to 3pm Dr
Allison Knight will host an illustrated talk on "Little
Lichens" using photographs and a field trip into the
ecosanctuary. Cost $29, members half-price.
> Dunedin Floral Art Society will meet at St
Peter's Church hall, cnr Hillside Rd and Eastbourne St,
1.30pm-4pm. Come and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment.
Demonstration on constructing a spring posy. Talks by members
on recent trips to the Chelsea Flower Show and Singapore and

> Otago Daffodil Group annual general meeting,
7.30pm, Janet Cameron Lounge, Green Island, followed by talk

> Blueskin Garden Club will meet at Waitati Hall at
7.30pm. Talk is on propagation. Raffle, sales table,
competition bloom and produce. All welcome - you don't need
