Do away with damp

The ODT has a Showerdome, including installation worth more than $400, to give away to a lucky reader.

Showerdome has been independently tested by the University of Waikato in summer and winter, and proven to lower humidity and sustain air temperature in the bathroom.

"Depending on the consumer's use of electric heaters to preheat or dry out a bathroom, plus their use of heated towel rails, the Showerdome could save a consumer in the region of hundreds of dollars per year," University of Waikato professor Dr James Carson said.

"Indirect savings due to reduced maintenance and healthcare costs may also result from the installation of a Showerdome."

According to the university's estimates, heating a bathroom for half an hour a day with a 2.4kW electric heater would cost about $100 a year, while using a 0.15kW heated towel rail for 12 hours a day would cost about $156 a year. Showerdome also makes mirror demisters and ceiling fans redundant. Combining all of these factors, a Showerdome may save homeowners about $250 a year in energy costs.
