Monday, March 17
Palmerston Garden Circle annual meeting, Palmerston Community Centre, 1.30pm. Speaker Barbara Sutherland. Competitions: All four classes. Vegetable is six runner beans. Chairman's challenge: A gentleman's buttonhole. Raffles.

Tuesday, March 18
Sawyers Bay Garden Club meets at the Emmanuel Church hall, Station Rd, Sawyers Bay. Speaker from Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Competitions: dahlias large and small; two tomatoes and ''all edible'' arrangement.

Wednesday, March 19
Botanical Society of Otago talk by department of botany research associate Jennifer Bannister, ''Botanising in the Miocene'', Zoology Benham Building, 346 Great King St, seminar room 215, 5.20pm. Fossil evidence for a warm rainforest in Otago in the early Miocene, including fossil leaves, flowers, pollen, fruits and insects.

Thursday, March 20
Outram Garden Club meets at Outram Community Hall at 7pm. Daffodil bulb sale, spud-in-the-bucket weigh-in, meeting to follow. Wendy Paterson speaks on winter colour. Competition: tomato, rose.

Saturday, March 22
Botanical Society of Otago field trip, 9am. Collect fossil leaves with palaeogeologist Daphne Lee and palaeobotanist Jennifer Bannister from a Miocene forest in Central Otago. Meet at the botany department car park, 464 Great King St to car pool. Return by 5pm. Bring hand lens, a pocketknife, chisel or rock hammer, lunch and plenty to drink. Rain date Sunday, March 23. Thursday, March 27
Heritage Roses Society meets at the Northern Cemetery, 5pm. ''Symbols, hips and suckers'' evening. Hear about some of the symbolism on the gravestones and see the last of the roses and hips. Members of the public are invited. Otago Herb Society meets at St Patrick's Centre, 32 Macandrew Rd, 7.30pm. Speaker is landscaper Neville Stewart.

Tuesday, April 1
Brockville Garden Club meets at the Community Church Hall, 1pm, to visit Joy Horton, who will talk about and demonstrate bonsai. Afternoon tea and raffles.
