Bracing for Broods

With the passing of our Lorde, Dunedin's pop market is readying itself for the next big show: the brother/sister duo Broods.

Formed in early 2013, Caleb and Georgia Nott started working with Lorde producer Joel Little, and were quickly signed with major American record label Capitol Records.

The duo's debut album was issued earlier this year, and was propelled to the top of the New Zealand charts by the moody and nostalgic electro hits Bridges and Mother and Father.

It's all about the atmosphere and the melody here.

It's vaguely Lorde-ish in its tempo, sure, but whereas Lorde's production is restrained, Broods seem to revel in layers of enveloping melancholia.

The pair perform at the Dunedin Town Hall on Friday.

CONFLICTING MESSAGE
Radio One's annual Onefest reels around again this week, and this year features a headline spot from psych-pop genius Kane Strang.

Strang's performance will be off the back of new single In Thailand (released yesterday), the first offering from his forthcoming release under the umbrella of Dunedin micro-indie label Fishrider Records, titled Sun Sounds.

Written while living in Frankfurt, In Thailand is an old song Strang omitted from his previous album, the self-released A Pebble and A Paper Crane.

Over a poppy bed of jangly acoustic, drums from Astro Children's Isaac Hickey, and lush arrangement/production from Strang himself (complete with a great slide-guitar solo), the song's melodies act to imply ''everything is fine''.

Lyrically, however, it's a tale centred on lying.

''It's pretty dark lyrically, like most things I do,'' Strang said.

''The song is about false promises: talking the talk but not walking the walk. Just saying things to keep someone around. The music seems almost sarcastically poppy to me.''
