Tonight, five Dunedin artists converge on Taste Merchants to celebrate the debut releases of singer-songwriters Ciaran McMeeken and Some Other Creature.

McMeeken has spent the past year hidden away writing and recording his music.

Spacious, ambient, and often melancholic, McMeeken draws heavily from artists such as Bon Iver, with swirling atmospherics surrounding acoustic guitar and strained vocals for his personal-sounding songs of love and loss.

His album, the Valley, was recorded in Owaka Valley in the Catlins, and free download cards will be available on the night.

Some Other Creature is the solo project of singer-songwriter Maddy Parkins-Craig.

Self-described as aligning with the traditions of Joni Mitchell, The Beatles and The Kinks, her debut EP is baroque and ''Downesian'' in the style of some of the modern Verlaines releases.

Lyrically too, some of Parkins-Craig's more politically-implicated statements, particularly the song America, give off a corporate moronic vibe, worthy of Downes' lip-curling snarl.

The EP was recorded at Albany Street Studio, with the majority of the parts written and performed by Parkins-Craig.

Joining Ciaran and Maddy at Taste Merchants are Julian Temple and Alex Vaatstra of the Julian Temple band, Apra award-winning songwriter Matt Langley and acoustic duo Jo Little and Jared Smith.

GOOD MONTH FOR MUSIC
Fans of ear-bleeding country rejoice, the iconic and laconic J Mascis, frontman and guitarist of legendary 1990s alternative rock outfit Dinosaur Jr, has announced a solo show in the city in March next year.

Mascis was last in New Zealand performing a sold-out Dinosaur Jr concert in Auckland in 2013.

Mascis is touring in support of his solo album Tied to a Star, released in August, and will perform a mix of solo material from it and his previous solo album Several Shades of Why, as well as aselection from Dinosaur Jr's storied catalogue in both acoustic and electric mode.

Mascis' drawling and detached vocals and distinct high gain, soaring guitar style have been extremely influential on the world of indie rock since Dinosaur Jr's formation in 1984.

Mascis' announcement comes on the back of Brooklyn songwriter Sharon Van Etten also announcing a Dunedin date in March, meaning it should be a great musical month for the city.

CORK'S FINEST
Regarded as two of Cork's finest singer-songwriters, Mick Flannery and John Spillane perform at Coronation Hall, Maori Hill, tonight.

Flannery's latest album, By The Rule, went to No 1 on the Irish charts within days of its release and was followed by a sellout tour of Ireland and the UK.

Spillane is a multi-platinum award-winning musician who is able to span various genres, from folk to pop.

The show, which starts at 8pm, will feature a solo set from each before they combine their talents.
