Tongue firmly in cheek for Ori

Empire of the Sun will headline Orientation '15.
This week the Otago University Students' Association announced the line-up for Orientation 2015.

As a public service, here's the Suitable Alternative guide to what's on musically at the Forsyth Barr stadium to help welcome students back to the city next month.

First up on the musical calendar is a headline show from electro-pop superstars Empire of the Sun.

Wearing costumes that put them somewhere between futuristic Aztec space chic and Zoolander fashion clowning, Australian musicians Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore bring a bit of tongue-in-cheek fantasy and playfulness to their collaboration.

Last year the pair scored a soundtrack for another tongue-in-cheek duo, the rebooted Dumb and Dumber To, and recorded their third album of four-to-the-floor straightforward pop/dance anthems.

They're all about the spectacle, it seems, so let's hope the live show is as bizarre and trippy as the look.

In support will be two New Zealand DJ groups, SWTMXKDS and Sniffers DJs.

The following night, Radio One presents another Australian group, the ''not at all similar to the Rolling Stones'' Sticky Fingers.

The Sydney band mixes pop and indie influences with a touch of reggae, dub, and roots not too dissimilar to former Dunedinites Six60.

In support is one of NZ hip-hop's finest, David Dallas, with his live band the Daylight Robbery, fresh from opening for international Dad-Wave rap duo phenomenon Run the Jewels in Australia, and Dunedin's own hip-hop trio, Dudstown Soundsystem.

Lastly, in March, it's the official afterparty.

Headlining is former Canadian naval reservist, dance star Kiesza.

Best known for Hideaway, from last year's Sound of a Woman, Kiesza spouts a '90s diva's take on house music.

Rhythmic and jazzy, it's Swedish queen Robyn for the young first-year crowd.

Opening the evening is English drum and bass duo Sigma and New Zealanders Gavin Correria and Marty Rich with their indie R&B Jupiter Project.

AMAZING EFFORT
Tonight Amazing Enterprises is doing its bit to help out the dry Dunedin indie gig scene by presenting ''Nobody Likes You When You Are 23'', featuring four upcoming Dunedin bands at the Dunedin Musician's Club.

Doors open at 8pm, with bluesy-ska three-piece Bottle kicking things off at 8.30.

Also performing are Invercargill/Dunedin-based experimental rock band Russian Blue and two drum and bass duos: the bubblegum fuzz of Toy Destruction and the debut of Aquatic Apes, a new groovy punk collaboration between Ben Fielding (Ostrander Aardvark, Beach Wolf) and Regan McManus (TLA, Queen Anne's Revenge).
