Staying on the road to weight-loss success

Every day I begin with porridge and a read of the paper; I'm a creature of habit.

Mostly, I suppose, because I take too long to make decisions.

If I stick to what I know, it drastically reduces the number of decisions I have to make and if I know roughly what I'm eating on a daily basis it keeps me on track with my nutrition plan and on the road to weight-loss success.

It's exciting to see the changes taking shape. Some take me by surprise.

For example, I was mildly amused to see a couple of bony feet staring up from the bottom of my legs.

It felt like only yesterday they were swollen size 8s.

Not one of my foot's 26 bones was visible to me eight weeks ago.

They were buried beneath my own insulation, tucked inside my sensible shoes for the wider foot.

Clothing is the biggest teller of all.

Layers are coming off, literally.

I had great delight in going down a jeans size this week.

My elasticised comfy clothes are almost too big to get away with wearing. Too big! Pinch myself.

I was thrilled to bits when Pete Mirrielees, my Let's Go Fitness trainer, told me he had a new client, Lisa, who was inspired by our column and wanted to start making better decisions regarding her health and fitness and experience for herself the many benefits to be had.

Pete asked me if I had any advice to offer her.

So, Lisa, I would say this to you: congratulations for taking the first step.

Your decision to incorporate exercise into your life will strengthen you physically and mentally and amaze you in ways you do not expect.

You have acknowledged to yourself that you want change, for whatever reason, so stay focused when times get tough and remind yourself why you started.

I am not going to tell you it is easy, but I am telling you it is worth it.

Understand that to change your current ways takes dedication, hard work and sacrifice and whether you are re-entering the world of fitness or joining for the first time you are off to great places.

I am very excited you jumped aboard the crazy train, and if you are anything like me, it is a decision you will be pleased you did make, eventually.
