Five questions with: Aaron Burgess

Former Otago rugby player and future policeman  Aaron Burgess, of Dunedin, won high praise last week for saving a woman swept out to sea by a rip at Tomahawk Beach.  

What was your best birthday present and why?
A couple of years ago my wife surprised me with a trip to Sydney for the two of us. I didn't know anything about it until a couple of days before we left.

You are going to an island. What three things would you take and why?
My cellphone, to stay in touch or get rescued. A football, to entertain myself. And a bottle of water, to stay hydrated.

What was one strong childhood memory?
Spending many weekends at the local swimming pool in Invercargill where both my parents worked. All that time in and around water came in handy this week.

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?
Fighting over religion.

What is one thing only your family knows about you?
For publishing in the newspaper? I don't like eating meat off the bone.
