Robert Piggott opened his gallery earlier this month after spending the preceding six months renovating the Jetty St premises, which comprises two exhibition spaces along with a printmaking and painting studio at the rear.

The British-born artist, who has lived in Dunedin since 1965 and has exhibited his works for more than 40 years, hopes the space will become a "resonant hub'' in which others are able to share their work.

"As an artist, I have a philosophy that there must be others who'd like to exhibit in a space without it having to be too commercial. I have enough work to keep showing regularly, but I'm open to taking on other artists, too. I'd really like to support other artists, particularly younger people.''
