Telcos launch cheaper mobile call rates

Telecom and Slingshot have this week responded to the lower mobile termination rates determination by lowering their national mobile calling rates.

Listed Telecom was first with its announcement on Wednesday, followed by Slingshot yesterday.

Telecom customers using the total home mobile plan could call from their nominated XT mobile to landlines or mobiles on any network in New Zealand for 29c per minute, as well as send up to 300 text messages per month.

The new total home mobile plan also included a home line, calling and 20GB of broadband data at home.

Telecom Retail chief marketing officer Kieren Cooney said the new plan was created in response to strong demand.

"This year, around 30,000 Telecom customers have already chosen to combine their mobile, landline and broadband services in one bill."

Slingshot general manager Scott Page announced two new toll plans - talk-a-lot and talk longer - which offered cut-price rates from home lines to any New Zealand or Australian landlines or New Zealand mobiles on any network at any time.

Talk-a-lot offered frequent toll-call makers a flat rate of 14c per minute while talk-longer customers could talk up to two hours on any toll call and pay $2.50.

Mr Page said while a 30-minute call from a home line to a New Zealand mobile could cost up to $16.50 (or 55c a minute) with other networks, the corresponding call would cost $4.20 (14c a minute) with Slingshot's new play.

Customers did not have to sign up their home phone with Slingshot and could choose to be a tolls-only customer.

Last week, Slingshot announced an unlimited data broadband plan available now for half price for the first six months.
