F&P confirms redundancies

Fisher & Paykel has confirmed 29 workers will be made redundant at its Auckland plant when it moves some manufacturing offshore.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) said the redundancies were being made because the manufacture of a particular model of fridge was being moved offshore.

Fisher & Paykel chief executive Stuart Broadhurst said: ``On 7 June we announced to staff we were shifting some of the refrigeration models made here to our overseas manufacturing plant. As a result, 29 positions will be made redundant.''

EPMU national secretary Bill Newson said all union members affected by the job losses would receive a redundancy package as part of their collective agreement.

FIRST Union general secretary Robert Reid said he had been helping workers at Fisher & Paykel's factory in Rayong, Thailand, to form a union.
He had visited them three times in recent years, and said low wages were a significant problem.
