The first merino wool was on offer at yesterday's South Island wool sale in Christchurch, attracting good attention from Italian buyers.

Unfortunately, prices were disappointing, which was of concern, but this year's New Zealand clip should continue to attract attention due to the soundness of staple following a good growing season, Roger Fuller, of Elders Primary Wool, said.

Dave Burridge, of PGG Wrightson Wool, said prices largely recovered from the dip in the market for most styles of wool, when compared with the previous sale.

With the bulk of the pre-lamb shorn clips drawing to a close, buyers were active to secure volumes of good-quality wool for early scouring.

Good style and longer second-shear fleece lifted 2%, average to poorer-style fleece was up 2%-3% and crossbred hogget and finer ewe fleece (34 micron and finer) were up 2%.
