High technology collaboration is the future for export growth between New Zealand and the United Kingdom, British High Commissioner Jonathan Sinclair says.

Among Mr Sinclair's visits in Dunedin yesterday was Animated Research Ltd which had a high reputation in the UK for its work with the America's Cup races, golf, car racing and other sport.

Mr Sinclair, who has been high commissioner for three months, had some examples of how the growth of technology collaboration was already working.

Orion Health, which launches its initial public offering on Monday, was doing well in the UK through its connection with the NHS, Britain's national health service.

The company had started its UK operations in Birmingham, had an office in Glasgow and was moving across to Northern Island.

''The trend is for smaller companies to do well then boom, and Orion is an example of that.''

A Christchurch-based company which had developed a way of recycling disposable nappies was linking with UK giant OCS to be taken global, Mr Sinclair said.

OCS had a global workforce of 60,000 with 3000 of them in New Zealand.

''There is a scale that comes with Britain which fits with high tech.''

Mr Sinclair is in Dunedin this weekend for the Kiwis v England rugby league test tonight and to read a lesson at the Armistice Service at St Paul's Cathedral tomorrow.

He met Dunedin university and business leaders yesterday.

As expected, the high commissioner is backing the English league and rugby teams to beat the Kiwis tonight and the All Blacks tomorrow at Twickenham.

However, he admitted to forgetting to bring a white jersey to wear to the test at Forsyth Barr Stadium and was going to seek out the team before the match so he could be suitably attired.

Mr Sinclair was enthusiastic about the export opportunities between New Zealand and the UK, despite England now slipping to be this country's fifth-largest export market.

The 2013 trade figures showed New Zealand exported $1.3 billion of goods to the UK and $1 billion of services.

From the Otago region, information had been exchanged on checking parasites in sheep, Tb testing of deer and on possum control and how measures in New Zealand could be used to control badgers which were thought to spread bovine Tb, he said.

The badger control was a ''huge issue'' in the UK.

Collaboration between the University of Otago and UK universities was also growing.

Mr Sinclair had high hopes of a growing collaboration between the New Zealand and UK film industries, both of which were thriving.
