Dunedin businessman Ian Taylor has added another job to his busy schedule by being elected president of the Institute of IT Professionals NZ.

The founder of Dunedin's Animation Research Ltd is a supporter of the IT industry and the skills of IT students who graduate from the city's tertiary institutions.

He accepted the nomination after being impressed by the work the institute did on behalf of the IT profession, institute chief executive Paul Matthews, formerly of Dunedin, said.

Mr Taylor said the two things mattering most to him were collaboration and engagement.

''I'm excited to see how the institute can work together and support other industry bodies. I am looking forward to helping show a more diverse group of tech people, developers, innovators and others why they should engage with the institute.''

He would make a priority of engaging younger innovators and under-represented groups, such as women and Maori.

There was a need to help strengthen the Maori technology business community in New Zealand and Mr Taylor saw a role for the institute in supporting young Maori who wanted to follow their dreams through innovation.

Qube Global Software managing director Mike Dennehy was elected deputy president of the institute.
