Port Otago plans more ''incremental improvements'' to its cruise ship facilities at Port Chalmers, but has ruled out any plans for a cruise ship terminal.

Port Otago chief executive Geoff Plunket said that in recent years the company had improved traffic management, provided a marquee at Port Chalmers with free Wi-Fi, and made improvements to the wharf surface for pedestrians.

''We've just purchased a golf cart to help transport passengers who have difficulty walking from the vessel,'' Mr Plunket said.

He said that while moving the private tour operators from the wharf had been unpopular with some tourism operators, it had significantly improved the on-wharf passenger experience and made the entire wharfside operation work more efficiently.

More work on the wharf was planned for next season, he said.

There were no plans to build a cruise ship terminal, as the cruise ship lines were happy with Port Otago's facilities and how the company managed passengers, Mr Plunket said.
