Main focus on dollar

New Zealand investors face a quiet week for data this week. The main focus will continue to be on the strength of the New Zealand dollar against main trading partners.

The dollar has been steadily rising against the Australian currency and falling against the US dollar.

Quotable Value publishes its latest housing data for December tomorrow, and the Real Estate Institute is likely to release its latest report on Friday.

Statistics New Zealand publishes data on December electronic card spending tomorrow, December food prices on Thursday and November's accommodation survey on Friday.

China, which is New Zealand's largest trading partner, publishes its latest trade data, including imports and exports for December.

In Australia, the focus will be on labour market data for December scheduled for release on Thursday.

Key data in the US this week includes retail sales tomorrow, and business expectations and inventory.

The main focus in Europe will be whether the euro zone has slipped into deflation.
