Prices at the South Island wool sale are reaching levels not seen during the past 12 months, Roger Fuller, of Elders Primary Wool, says.

Prices continued to ''surge'' across all categories at this week's sale in Christchurch. Crossbred fleece and crossbred second-shear were up to 3% dearer, 31 to 35 micron lifted up to 4%, and 28 to 30 micron lifted up to 5%, Mr Fuller said.

While the sale was originally rostered for 6000 bales, the final tally was 10,000 and the market was able to sustain the extra quantity.

The main increases had been in the finer microns under 35 and also in mid micron wool. Mid micron levels were ''very encouraging''.

Dave Burridge, of PGG Wrightson Wool, said the lower New Zealand dollar assisted to underpin the already strong demand.

There was strong competition and Chinese requirements continued to dominate, supported by Australasia, India, Western Europe and the Middle East.
