Meridian rewards for staff and shareholders

Meridian Energy rewarded its shareholders yesterday through an increased dividend payout but its board and staff were also well remunerated throughout the year ended June.

Chief executive Mark Binns was paid more than $1.93million in the year and 10 other staff earned between $430,000 and an upper level of $839,000.

In all, 353 staff received pay of more than $100,000 in the year, including 23 employers who no longer worked for Meridian or its subsidiaries.

The bulk of the employees (182) were in the $100,000 to $149,999 salary range.

The company said in its financial results it aimed to motivate and reward executives with a level and mix of remuneration that reflected their roles and accountabilities within the company and appropriately aligned the interests of the executives with those of shareholders.

Board chairman Chris Moller received total fees for the year of $165,000, deputy chairman Peter Wilson received total fees of $121,500, which included committee fees.
