Energy efficient lighting wins business challenge

An LED lighting initiative has been named overall winner in this year's Audacious business challenge.

The awards evening for the annual year long University of Otago student start up challenge was held last night in Dunedin.

LED Light Australasia, led by Mashkoor Ahmad, set about saving electricity by using energy efficient solutions.

The project involved establishing an LED light assembly plant in New Zealand, with customised solutions for consumers.

Seahorse Child Safety System, led by Rachel Loo, was second.

It tackled Forgotten Baby Syndrome, through the use of an in car monitor that used a weight sensor to know a child was in the car seat, and a key chain the parent or caregiver carried with them that alerted them when they had left a child in the car.

The third placed business idea, MechDoc Solutions, led by Sri Themudu Bully Baboo, aimed to reduce the anxiety caused by the glowing of the ''check engine light'' in vehicles.
