Alliance Group is preparing to launch a new range of market-ready lamb packs into retail and food service sectors in China next month.

The Pure South-Grand Farm co-branded products would initially focus on the "upper end'' of the market and target five regions, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Harbin, Alliance chief executive David Surveyor said.

The packs would be available from eight retail chains, with 200 selected outlets, before being rolled out to other parts of the country.

The launch marked a "major milestone'' in Alliance Group's vision to create new product forms and ranges that would be either produced at source or further processed in the market to meet the growing demands of China's food service sector, Mr Surveyor said.

The five regions were selected because of the higher purchasing power of their populations, concentration of foreigners and higher economic activity.

"This initiative will help us build a deeper understanding of the supply and value chains and eventually secure the added value we are seeking in this market with a 'packed-at-origin' offering,'' Mr Surveyor said in a statement.

In April, Alliance Group signed an agreement with Grand Farm, its in-market partner, signalling further strategic co-operation between the two companies.

Meanwhile, Silver Fern Farms has launched a beef retail range in Germany, in time for the German barbecue season.

The launch into EDEKA supermarkets for its retail lamb, venison and beef ranges had been a "significant'' investment in production and sales and marketing, SFF said.
