More than 80 secondary school students from throughout
Otago attended an OutStanding in their Field rural careers expo
run by Meat and Wool New Zealand, where they were exposed to
some of the varied careers and jobs on offer.
Event manager Peter Taylor said the idea was to improve
knowledge of agricultural careers and remind people of
agriculture's importance to the economy.
"The perception of an agricultural career is not that
accurate. The perception of the average New Zealander is that
it is cold and there is not much future. That couldn't be
further from the truth," he said.
On offer yesterday were presentations on agribusiness,
research science, sheep and beef, veterinary science, dairy,
shearing and wool and meat industries.
Mr Taylor said similar expo were being held throughout the
country.
