Brief arrest made

An alleged serial underwear thief was arrested in Dunedin yesterday, with police hoping to reunite the "large quantity" of recovered female briefs with their rightful owners.

A 38-year employed man was arrested yesterday morning following a tip-off from the public he had taken underwear from clotheslines in the Abbotsford area, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday on two charges of burglary, he said.

More charges were possible.

Over the past few months, police had received a number of reports of women's underwear going missing in the area, he said.

The arrest should "allay any fears" of Abbotsford residents.

The man lived in the area, he said.

Police had recovered a large number of items of female underwear and asked anyone who had items stolen from the area to contact Green Island police.
