Restrictions may end

Dunedin City Council staff will decide by early next week whether to lift water restrictions in place for residents at Waikouaiti, Merton, Karitane and Seacliff.

Recent rainfall had caused a "spike" in the Waikouaiti River flow in recent days. It rose from a low of 110 litres/sec earlier this month to 1700 litres/sec earlier this week, council water operations team leader Gerard McCombie said yesterday.

The flow had dropped again to about 300 litres/sec by yesterday morning, he said.

That was well above the minimum flow of 150 litres/sec, the rate below which Otago Regional Council consents required the city council to take steps to conserve water.

Staff were expected to decide later this week, or early next week, whether to lift the level two water restrictions, which prohibited the use of sprinklers and limited residents to using hand-held hoses between 8pm and 8am.
