Portobello Rd remained closed last night after a fall of
earth and large macrocarpas on Saturday made the road
impassable. Photo by Jane Dawber.
Authorities are warning that Portobello Rd is still
closed despite appearances that the road has been cleared, and
hope to reopen the road for limited use some time tomorrow
morning.
A major slip north of Macandrew Bay blocked Portobello Rd
between Castlewood Rd and Broad Bay yesterday, forcing
residents to take Highcliff Rd to travel to the city this
morning.
The Dunedin City Council says there are still "numerous
unstable banks along the road despite it looking quite clear"
and it will likely not reopen until later today.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said last night
that as the city dried out he expected there to be plenty of
debris on roads, and the possibility of more slips.
He urged drivers to be aware of the danger and travel more
slowly.
