Mr Ryall sacked Mr Thomson after the DHB's former chief information officer Michael Swann and his friend and business associate Kerry Harford were found guilty in December 2008 year of defrauding the board of $16.9 million.

The fraud happened over a period of six years.

Mr Ryall said he held Mr Thomson responsible but the sacked health boss said he inherited the problem, and simply sorted it out, calling in the police.

Mr Thomson remained on the board because he was not only a government appointee: he was also elected.
