As they prepared to farewell one ground, Kyle Mikaere (9) and Nicolas Sharp (8) took the opportunity to check out a new one at the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza open day on Saturday.

Visitors were allowed on to what will be the playing field.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd marketing and communications manager Jo Scully said nearly 8000 people turned out to get a closer view of the stadium's progress, which is halfway through construction.

A small entry fee meant Rotary International raised more than $10,000 for its PolioPlus campaign, she said.
