Need for more toilets at stadium disputed

The Forsyth Barr Stadium has almost four times the toilets available at Carisbrook, and a spokesman for the Westpac Stadium, in Wellington, said yesterday there appeared little need for any more.

Information from Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) showed the Forsyth Barr Stadium would have 316 toilets and "210 linear metres of urinals".

Carisbrook has 82 toilets, 120 linear metres of urinals, and 20 individual urinals.

DVML chief executive David Davies said last week he wanted toilets in the west stand of the stadium, where there were none planned.

But Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry said spending $1 million on more toilets was not the most sensible move.

Westpac Stadium marketing manager Steven Thompson said yesterday he could "completely understand" the trust's decision not to put toilets in the west stand.

There was a cost not just to build toilets, but to run and maintain them, and they broke down regularly, he said.

The Westpac Stadium had 270 toilets, nine for wheelchair users, and 270 urinals.

With the Forsyth Barr Stadium not expected to be full very often, it made sense not to have toilets in every stand.

Even for games with the Hurricanes or the Wellington Phoenix, one third of the Westpac Stadium was closed, so toilets were not used, he said.

"It's just common sense."
