Police call city chase 'dangerous'

Police say they are "very disappointed" after pursuing a fleeing motorist through Dunedin streets at speeds reaching 100kmh last night.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the chase began at 9.03pm in Clermiston Ave, Corstorphine, when a 26-year-old Dunedin man driving a Subaru failed to stop for a police patrol car.

The chase continued for three minutes, with the Subaru reaching speeds of up to 100kmh in a 70kmh zone and crossing the centre line, Snr Sgt Benn said.

The pursuit ended after the car struck a kerb in Blackhead Rd, damaging a front axle, he said.

There was no other traffic in the area at the time, and no injuries resulted, but police were "very disappointed", he said.

"The person has put himself, police officers and members of the public in danger," Snr Sgt Benn said.

The man was held in custody overnight and would appear in the Dunedin District Court today, charged with disqualified driving, reckless driving, failing to stop and breaching bail conditions not to drive, he said.

• Police were last night questioning another driver after a car collided with a parked vehicle in Evans St, Opoho, about 9.15pm.

The driver was undergoing drink-driving tests, but no other details were available, Snr Sgt Benn said last night.
