Dunedin voters urged to enrol

Dunedin voters are urged to enrol to shift the city from its position as the city council area with the second-lowest percentage of enrolled voters.

It is estimated only 88.3% of the city's eligible voters are on the roll, and 11,633 are missing.

Dunedin registrar of electors Dee Vickers said in her five years in the job, the city had never shifted above second bottom.

The city with the worst record is Palmerston North (87.62%), with Wellington (90.15%) third.

Invercargill has 98.51% on the roll and 587 not enrolled.

Ms Vickers said many of the missing voters were students.

Among the southern local body areas, Queenstown Lakes District has the lowest percentage enrolled at 79.18% and Gore District the highest with 98.31%.

This week, everyone who is enrolled will be sent an enrolment pack to check their details are correct.

If an update pack had not arrived by Thursday, they would not be on the roll and would not be sent voting papers for council and district health board elections in October.

People who had moved house and not updated their information needed to do so.

The printed rolls close on August 20.

While eligible voters could enrol until the day before the election, those enrolled after the printed rolls closed would have to lodge special votes, in person, rather than by mail.

Enrolment forms are available from the elections website or from any Post Shop.
