Accused drive-by gunman in custody

A Black Power Mangu Kaha gang member charged in relation to the drive-by shooting of a car in Pine Hill late on Friday, did not seek bail when brought before the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

Damian Karl Wereta (30), of Palmerston, consented to a remand in custody and would make a bail application at his next appearance, on Friday, Judge Paul Kellar was told.

Wereta faces indictably-laid charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm (a shotgun), and alarming people in a house with intent to intimidate them by the discharge of a firearm, on Friday or Saturday.

A further allegation against Wereta is of driving on Pine Hill Rd while his licence was suspended, on Sunday.
