The Methodist Mission's "Float your vote" meeting planned for
August 21 has attracted more than 30 candidates so far.
The meeting is loosely based on speed-dating to bring voters
and council candidates together.
Mission chief executive Laura Black said yesterday issues
raised with candidates included everything from "why there
are never any doggy do bags at St Clair, to why there's
nothing for teenagers to do in South Dunedin".
Some people were concerned the Dunedin City Council and the
University of Otago were clamping down on the students, "and
others horrified at the thought that the university might
grow". The most common feeling seemed to be of "disconnect
from the decisions and processes used by the council".
The meeting will be held at the mission's Approach Learning
Centre, Mornington Rd. A free shuttle bus will run from the
RSA in South Dunedin.
