Dunedin barista Nick Mackay has won an international barista
contest.
Mr Mackay beat baristas from all over New Zealand and Fiji to
win the 2010 Accor New Zealand and Fiji Barista Competition,
held in Christchurch last month.
"We had 10 minutes to prep' our station, then 14 minutes to
make 12 mean coffees," Mr Mackay (22) said.
"Each finalist had to prepare and present a single espresso,
a single latte in a glass and a single cappuccino to each of
the four judges at once."
Mr Mackay trained as a barista at Aoraki Polytechnic.
"Now that I have a wee taste for what is out there, I'm keen
to start entering more competitions and improve on my
technique and presentation. I'd love to have my own café some
day, centred on great quality, fair-trade coffee."
Mr Mackay works at the Relish Restaurant and Bar in the
Mercure Dunedin.
He won $1000 worth of air travel with his award.
