Strong winds, cold temperatures and hail or snow are expected
to low levels in parts of Otago and Southland today.
The cold front was expected to move quickly northeast over
New Zealand today, with weather clearing for most places
tomorrow, a MetService special advisory says.
"Although severe, this cold outbreak is expected to be
short-lived, with showers quickly clearing from most places
on Saturday and temperatures rebounding," forecaster Oliver
Druce said.
Snow was expected down to about 200m in parts of Southland
and Otago, with strong winds, cold temperatures and hail or
snow likely around Dunedin and in South Otago, he said.
"Heavy snowfalls are not expected and the main weather threat
is from the strong winds and cold temperatures."
Motorists were advised to check road conditions before
leaving, he said.
Weather ambassador Bob McDavitt said the weather was expected
to turn around again on Sunday, with northwest gales possibly
becoming severe in eastern parts of the South Island.
Another southerly, but not as cold as today's, was expected
to hit late on Sunday and Monday.
"These swinging conditions are likely to make driving
conditions challenging."
