Move to extend kerbside recycling

The Dunedin City Council wants to extend its kerbside recycling scheme.

Subject to public consultation, the extended area would take effect at the end of February, although households would not be billed until the 2011-12 financial year.

A report by solid waste manager Ian Featherston to this week's Waikouaiti Coast Community Board meeting detailed the proposed extension, which would also include parts of Saddle Hill and Mosgiel-Taieri.

The report said the collection areas had been reviewed and extended to cover new residential developments since 2003, when recycling began.

This month a letter would be sent to affected householders, who would have 30 days to consider the proposal.

For the 2011-12 year, kerbside recycling would cost households $63.

The proposed areas are: Saddle Hill: Scroggs Hill Rd, Brighton Scroggs Hill Rd, Sproull Drive, Scurr Rd, Blackhead Rd between Emerson St and Green Island Bush Rd, Green Island Bush Rd to Church Hill Rd to District Rd.

Waikouaiti Coast: Green Rd, Old Mount Cargill Rd to Green Rd.

Mosgiel-Taieri: School Rd South, Gordon Rd between School Rd South and Tirohanga Rd, Tirohanga Rd to Outram Mosgiel Rd, Halfway Bush Rd.

Waikouaiti Coast deputy chairwoman Geraldine Tait told the Otago Daily Times traditionally there was little opposition to paying for recycling, because it was something most people felt good doing.

However, since some areas were semi-rural there might be greater resistance from people for whom recycling was not so much of a concern, she said.
