Going to the dentist is not always an uplifting experience, but for the 20 people who went to Dentistry on Musselburgh on Saturday, it was.

They took the opportunity to have their pearlers checked and give to a worthy charity at the same time.

Dentists Sarah Ting and Saleema Reeves opened the surgery and waived their usual fees of $100 to $200 in exchange for an equivalent donation to a Pakistan flood appeal.

Ms Reeves said it would have been nice for the appointment list to be "chocka", but she understood the situation in Canterbury had overshadowed people's thoughts of the death and destruction in Pakistan.

Patient Lynley Harris said she was due for a check-up and it was not always easy to find spare money to give to charity, so the fundraiser was the perfect opportunity.

The dentists' initiative raised more than $3000. Donations are still being accepting this week.

The event also received support from Harvey Norman, which donated a television on which footage from the floods, supplied by TVNZ, was played.
