Who knew Dunedin once kept monkeys in the city's Botanic Garden?

In 1953, Dunedin City Council councillor C.J.Hayward suggested monkeys would attract more children to the gardens.

Three monkeys were imported from Wellington but one died from pneumonia and one escaped and was run over by a car.

The Otago Daily Times reported at the time the monkey escaped at feeding time but Avis Hunter has recently had a book for children published called: "I let the monkeys out".
